Let’s keep things simple.

You’ve got two choices in life. You can work for yourself or you can work for someone else. If you work for yourself, you’re the boss. If you work for someone else then they are the boss.

Which do you want?

Duh! Work for yourself and be your own boss. The funny thing is it all comes down to one thing.

Self-discipline.

This is the ability to make yourself do what needs to be done. Because let’s face it, there are things in life that must be done that aren’t always fun. Things like exercise, eating vegetables, and self-development.

Isn’t it easier to scroll through Instagram, or play a game, or hang with friends? Sure it is and most people spend their time on these tasks.

But if the crucial things are ignored there is a steep price! If you don’t exercise you become fat. If you don’t eat vegetables your body and mind lack crucial nutrition. If you don’t develop yourself you’ll never grow beyond your current situation.

In short, without self-discipline, you’ll get nowhere.

Now, in order to develop self-discipline, there is a simple 3 step formula.

Here it is:

  1. Define what you want in very specific terms.
  2. Write it down on paper, first thing when you wake up every morning as if it’s already happened.
  3. Never stop.

That’s it.

I’m completely serious. Let’s dive into each step.

Step One: If you don’t define what you want you are just treading water and going nowhere fast. If you want to start your own business and be your own boss, what does that look like? Maybe you want to travel. Great! Where do you want to go and when will you leave? Do you want to learn another language? Maybe you want to own a Maserati or a yacht. Or perhaps you would like to start a non-profit that makes the world a better place. Great! Don’t limit yourself. Let your inner child dream and fantasize. Know what you want and then, write it down.

Step Two: Write it down in the present tense as if it has already happened or is happening. For example, instead of writing down “I want to speak fluent Spanish”, write “I speak fluent Spanish”.

Be specific as well. Don’t write, “I would like to make a million dollars someday”. Write this, “I earn one million dollars by this time next year.” Please note, you’ll want to write down the date and time.

Write them down first thing every morning. It will turn into a very powerful habit. You’ll want to do this first thing every morning so that your subconscious mind gets to work right away. Soon it will be like a mantra repeated to yourself constantly.

Step Three: Never stop. Winston Churchill is famously known for saying, “Never, never, never give up.” There is power in persistence. Writing down your goals gives you incredible power. You’ll naturally start taking steps, making plans, and doing what is necessary to achieve the goals you have written down.

If things don’t happen as quickly as you would like, you may begin to doubt and consider not writing them down or skipping a day. Don’t stop, not even for one day. Always write them down first thing every morning. This step is crucial and will keep you on the path toward your bliss.
